Finding something new to learn can be hard work

Information Overload

We are always connected. Be it a smart phone or a laptop. Last week, I want to know how internet works! I want to know what happens from the moment I input my user name and password on a site till the moment I can see the personalised feed.

Enter Google! In seconds, I have access from books to YouTube videos. After a bit of digging around, I landed up on Khan Academy site. The site is pretty good. Small 5–7 minute videos. Perfect for people like me. In nearly 45 minutes, I captured the entire flow and learned some new things I didn’t knew before.

How the Internet Works

I am an engineer and would always get excited if I make something work. For example, just switching on a light bulb from my mobile phone will make by face glow like a 100W bulb. I heard of IBM Bluemix and desperate to make an end to end web app. Gosh! I need some web development skills now. Enter Google again! In minutes, I came to know that the whole browser world is overflowing with JavaScript. I knew there is always a book for dummies. I need something interactive. Enter Codecademy, Free code camp, Coursera. Fiddled around all of them a bit and decided Responsive Website specialisation suits me. For starters, it’s 5–7 minute videos and quizzes that will allow me to pat myself saying 'Great Job’. I can upload code and a community to correct me if I am struck.

Create a Web Experience

I was able to create a simple static website-Avengers To Do by the end of the first course in the specialisation.

I love Math and picked up a book called storytelling with data and immediately hooked to the book when I read the following

“Power corrupts, Power point corrupts absolutely.”

Story telling with data

The book starts with a note “Bad graphs are everywhere”. Reading a bit, I enjoyed it. Some are intuitive but you will end up learning the right questions to ask to get your message across the audience rather than just a fancy graph.
